Welcome to Ashburn, Virginia
Like many of the areas in the Metro DC area, Ashburn has a long history, dating back to the 1700s when two men, Thomas Lee and Robert Carter, tried to buy up strategic plots of land in Virginia. Thomas Lee's great-grandson, George, built a mansion named Farmwell on the land owned by his ancestor, and the town which was later to become Ashburn was named after the Farmwell mansion.
In early 1860, the Alexandria, Loudoun & Hampshire Railroad (now the W&OD Trail) established a depot at Ashburn Road. The post office there became Farmwell, and the original Farmwell became Old Farmwell. Farmwell might have remained the name had it not been for a Farmville Post Office in Prince Edward County. It was decided that the two names looked too similar in handwritten form, and Farmwell was renamed Ashburn, after a nearby plantation.
While there were no Civil War battles fought in Ashburn proper, the Battle of Ball's Bluff, largest battle in Loudoun County was fought in nearby Leesburg, and there are four Civil War battle sites within an easy distance of Ashburn.
Other noteworthy locations include the headquarters of the Washington Redskins, which is open during training camp each year.
Schools are part of the Loundoun County School System, and there are two public high schools and several elementary and middle schools serving the city.
Ashburn is located near the Dulles Toll Road, providing an easy commute anywhere in the Metro DC area. The Silver Line is projected to extend to Ashburn by 2019 or 2020. That will make commuting even easier.
There's plenty of dining and shopping at One Loudoun, a mixed-use development in the heart of Loudoun County at Rt. 7 and the Loudoun County Parkway
