Welcome to Haymarket, Virginia
Haymarket has long had the nickname, The Crossroads, because it has been one through most of its history. The area was originally used by the Iroquois as a hunting area, and even when it was settled, the preponderance of hunting paths meant that the name stuck.
The town of Haymarket was formally founded in 1799, on lands owned by William Skinker. Aren't you glad the town wasn't named after him? Several years later, the town was selected as the location for a District Court, and a clerk's office and jail were built. Until 1830, the Court was responsible for much of the activity in the town. During the Civil War, on November 4, 1862, Union troops invaded Haymarket and burned the town. Only four buildings survived: three small houses and the former Courthouse which had been converted to St. Paul's Church. The town remained mostly unpopulated for the rest of the war.
It was rebuilt after the war's end and soon regained much of its prosperity, which remains today.
Haymarket is near both Gainesville and Manassas, both of which provide shopping, dining and other activities. There are a number of nearby parks and Civil War battlefields for you outdoor enthusiasts and history buffs.
While Haymarket itself has no high school, students attend nearby Battlefield High School, which bears a Haymarket address but lies just outside the actual town limits. Battlefield High School is part of the excellent Prince William County school system.
With easy access to I66, commuting to other parts of the DC Metro area is straightforward.
