Welcome to Prince George's County
Prince George's County (or PG County as many of the locals refer to it) is the second most populous county in Maryland, and it has a lot to recommend it as a place to live.
It is named after Prince George of Denmark (1653–1708), the husband of Anne, Queen of Great Britain. One of the most notable historic events associated with the county was the writing of The Star Spangled Banner. During The War of 1812, the British marched through Bladensburg on their way to burn the White House. On their return, they kidnapped a prominent doctor, William Beanes, and Lawyer Francis Scott Key was asked to negotiate for his release. The negotiation led to him writing the song, which became our National Anthem.
There are five key regions to Prince George's County: North County, Central County, the Rural Tier, the Inner Beltway, and South County.
Northern Prince George's County includes Adelphi, Beltsville, College Park, Greenbelt, and Laurel. This region is anchored by the Capital Beltway and the Baltimore-Washington Parkway. It's currently experiencing a population boom, attributed to the building of the Inter-County Connector.
Central County, located on the eastern outskirts of the Capital Beltway, consists of Bowie, Greater Upper Marlboro, Mitchellville, Springdale and Woodmore. According to the 2010 census, it has generally been the fastest growing region of the county.
The Rural Tier is in the area well beyond the Beltway to the east and south of central county and contains Upper Marlboro proper, the county seat.
The Inner Beltway communities are Capitol Heights, District Heights, Forestville, Seat Pleasant and Suitland. They border the neighboring District of Columbia's northeastern and southeastern quadrants, and this region is the most densely populated area of the county.
South County is a pleasing blend of the greenery of the Rural Tier and the new development of Central County. Its main communities are Clinton, Fort Washington, Oxon Hill, and Temple Hills. As the only portion of Prince George's County to enjoy the Potomac River waterfront, it contains the National Harbor project: a town center and shopping and living development on the Potomac.
As you can see, the County wears many different faces, and you'll be able to find just about any type of living you'd like. From rural to urban to waterfront, Prince George's County has it all!
Many of the regions have excellent dining and entertainment options. The Rural Tier contains Patuxent River Park , a large natural preserve, perfect for hiking and bird watching. There's also Rosaryville State Park, popular for both hiking and biking.
With easy access to major highways and several large employers, commuting to work anywhere in the Greater DC area is possible.
Schools are part of the Prince George's County School District, with plenty of schools dotted around the county.
